If you’re considering whether to import a JDM car from Japan or buy one locally in Edmonton, you might wonder which is the better option. Here’s why importing directly from Japan is often the smarter choice.
JDM cars built for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) are known for their superior craftsmanship, advanced engineering, and reliability. Many enthusiasts argue that vehicles manufactured in Japan for domestic use are built to a higher standard than their North American counterparts.
Strict Quality Standards: Japanese automakers enforce rigorous inspections before releasing vehicles into the market.
Better Maintenance: Due to cultural pride in car ownership, many Japanese cars are well-maintained and in excellent condition when auctioned.
Exclusive JDM Models: Some of the most desirable cars—like the Nissan Skyline, Toyota Chaser, and Honda Beat—were never officially sold in North America.
Importing from Japan is often more affordable than purchasing a JDM vehicle locally in Edmonton.
Lower Prices: Cars in Japan depreciate quickly due to their strict vehicle inspection laws, which make owning older cars expensive. This means you can find high-quality JDM cars at a fraction of the cost of their North American equivalents.
Avoid Local Markups: Dealers selling imported JDM cars in Edmonton often add a huge markup, making them far more expensive than sourcing directly from Japan.
No Middlemen: When you import directly, you skip extra dealership fees and commissions, keeping costs lower.
When buying locally, you’re limited to whatever happens to be available at that time. With Japanese auctions, you get access to thousands of cars every week, making it much easier to find the exact make, model, trim, and color you want.
Handpick Your Ideal Car: Instead of settling for whatever’s on the lot, you can browse thousands of listings to find the perfect JDM import.
Rare & Unique Models: Get access to limited-edition vehicles and rare configurations that never made it to the North American market.
Thanks to Canada’s 15-year import rule, bringing a JDM car into Edmonton is now a straightforward and hassle-free process. With our expert guidance, you can import your dream car with confidence.
Importing a JDM car may seem complex, but we make it simple and stress-free. We handle everything from sourcing and bidding to shipping and customs. Here’s exactly how it works:
To start the process, we need:
A Purchase-to-Order Agreement – This contract protects both of us, sets your maximum budget, and details exactly what you’re looking for.
A $1,000 security deposit – This is fully refundable if we don’t find or win the car you want.
Once we receive your agreement and deposit, we’ll send you curated lists of cars that match your criteria. Each listing includes:
Photos and detailed specs from Japan’s top auction houses.
Auction sheet translation and inspection results to verify condition.
If you find a car you love, we’ll:
Bid on your behalf up to your maximum budget.
Perform additional inspections (like rust checks) if needed.
If we win, you’ll need to pay the full amount, including fees, within 4 days.
After winning the car, we:
Transport it to our Japan facility for a thorough check-up (HD photos, test drive, cleaning, paperwork preparation, etc.).
Arrange shipment to your country (typically 5-9 weeks).
Once your JDM car reaches Canada:
Customs clearance takes 4-5 days (we handle all paperwork and translations).
We coordinate delivery to your location if needed.
To legally drive your imported JDM car:
You’ll need an out-of-province inspection to meet local road safety regulations.
After passing the inspection, you’re ready to enjoy your JDM dream car!
We handle everything so you don’t have to.
No hidden fees, no surprises.
Get rare, high-quality JDM cars.
Fast replies and guidance at every step.
These are a few of our mostly commonly asked questions.
The simple answer is yes. Several cars that go through auction will have unknown mileage though. This will always be mentioned on the auction sheet. Check on the auction sheet beside the mileage for these marks – *, #, $. Our translation will always clearly state it as well.
The seller writes half of the sheet and the auction inspector writes the other half. The seller writes the car info, sales points, and notes. The inspector writes the condition report and diagram notes. The inspector also checks the info written by the seller to make sure it’s correct.
yes you can, The auction is a third party. That means they are not affiliated with the seller. In fact, the auction gets paid whether the car sells or not. There are over 100 auctions across Japan. They are in competition with one another. If the inspections were not trust worthy at that auction, buyers would stop buying from them.
While rare, auction purchases are non-refundable and non-returnable. This is why working with a trusted importer like us is essential. We can thoroughly inspect and vet each vehicle to ensure you get the right car, free of unexpected issues.
We will translate the sheets for you. This includes the sales points, notes, report, and the Japanese on the diagram notes. Note that Jurojin imports does full translations of the auction sheets. Most exporters only partially translate the sheets and some don’t at all.
Different auctions have slight differences in their sheets, but for the most part, this is not necessary to pay attention to in order to buy a car. The same basic formula is shared between all the major auctions.
You can buy any grade car that you like. Some clients want pristine cars, some want project cars. What I have seen however is that most people buying lower grade cars end up not being completely satisfied. Unless you are an expert in building cars, it’s easy to fall into the trap of not realizing how much is involved in bringing life back into a car.
Be careful looking at the pictures of the car. The true vehicle condition is not accurately shown in the pictures. Get in the habit of reviewing the auction sheet body diagram in detail instead of looking at the pictures to gauge the quality of the vehicle. Auction sheets always describe even the smallest flaws and issues in detail, so its best to cross examine using both.
Importing a JDM car into Edmonton (and the rest of Canada) requires compliance with several government regulations. While the process is straightforward, you must meet specific criteria set by Transport Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to ensure a smooth import process. Here’s what you need to know:
✔️ 15-Year Rule: The vehicle must be at least 15 years old based on its manufacturing month and year to be eligible for import.
✔️ Bus Restriction: If the vehicle is classified as a bus, it must have been manufactured before 1971 to be imported.
✔️ Quebec and PEI Exception: If you live in Quebec or PEI, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old based on its manufacturing month and year.
🔹 Radiation & Soil Inspection: The vehicle must pass a radiation and soil examination to ensure it is safe for Canadian roads.
🔹 Airbag Requirement: The vehicle must be equipped with airbags to meet safety regulations.
🔹 Steering & Seat Restrictions: Vehicles cannot have aftermarket steering wheels or seats without airbags. Any modifications that remove the factory-installed airbag system could result in the vehicle being denied entry.
Canada enforces these import regulations to ensure vehicle safety, environmental compliance, and roadworthiness. Importing a non-compliant vehicle could result in denied entry, additional fees, or required modifications before registration. By following these guidelines, you can legally and smoothly import your dream JDM car.

We offer two primary shipping methods for your JDM car. Here’s what you need to know:
Generally more expensive than Ro/Ro and not significantly faster.
Best suited for:
Low-clearance vehicles that can’t be driven onto a Ro/Ro ship.
Oversized vehicles that exceed Ro/Ro limits.
Zero-mile transport (no one drives your car at any point).
Shipping additional parts, engines, or multiple cars together.
Exclusive transport preference (if you don’t want your car shipped with others).
We use specialized rubber mats and precise cable placements to ensure vehicles are secure and protected during transport.
Choose Ro/Ro Shipping.
Go with Container Shipping.
When importing a JDM vehicle to Edmonton, choosing the best shipping method is crucial. You need to consider factors like cost, time, safety, convenience, and port availability. Below, we compare JDM Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) shipping and JDM Container shipping to help you make an informed decision.
Not available at all ports; always check if your destination port supports RORO.
New vehicle manufacturers get priority, so grey market vehicles may experience long wait times (weeks or months) before securing space on a RORO ship.
Generally faster than container shipping as vehicles are simply driven onto the cargo deck and secured.
Vehicles must be operational to drive on and off the vessel, and a small amount of gasoline should be left in the tank.
More widely available since it does not require special loading ramps.
Typically takes longer because cars must be loaded into a container, secured, and then loaded onto the vessel.
Unlike RORO, vehicles do not need to be functional and can be transported without gasoline.
Considered the most cost-effective option for vehicle transportation.
Typically cheaper than container shipping, but availability and demand can impact cost.
More expensive as it requires a dedicated container for your vehicle.
Higher costs for loading, securing, and port handling.
No personal belongings or extra parts can be left in the vehicle.
The vehicle remains exposed, making it less secure for additional cargo.
Offers better security as the vehicle is enclosed inside a container.
Allows for extra parts or belongings to be transported along with the vehicle.
Easier loading/unloading as vehicles are simply driven on and off.
Vehicles with lowered suspensions, body kits, or modifications may face a higher risk of damage due to multiple drivers handling loading/unloading.
More convenient as you can immediately drive your car after arrival.
More complex loading/unloading process requiring specialized equipment.
Better for highly modified or non-running vehicles as they can be carefully loaded and inspected before starting.
RORO Shipping
Not suitable for very low vehicles that can’t safely drive up ramps.
Oversized vehicles may not fit within the designated space on RORO ships.
More flexible for low-clearance or oversized vehicles.
Can accommodate non-drivable vehicles.
Choose RORO Shipping if: You want a faster, more affordable, and hassle-free option for an operational vehicle with no modifications.
Choose Container Shipping if: You need extra security, want to transport additional parts, or have a heavily modified or non-running vehicle.
Once you’ve ordered your car in Japan, it takes an average of 5-9 weeks to arrive at a West Coast port.
Shipping from Japan is included in the total cleared customs price.
Upon arrival, the car goes through customs clearance, which takes about 5 business days.
Once cleared, your car is ready for pickup at the port or can be shipped cross-country to your location in Edmonton.
We also offer shipping to East Coast ports upon request – just let us know your preference!
The automaker’s response to the luxury four-door sedan market, and in recent years it has become a favourite amongst the VIP tuning community. Although being produced for only 14 years, it left a lasting impression on everyone. Who doesn’t want a luxurious sedan that can be had with the iconic 2JZ engine straight from the factory? With the Aristo, you get both room and performance.
In the 1990s, if you wanted an all-wheel-drive sedan or station wagon, the Subaru Legacy was the car to go for. It is available in sedan and station wagon body styles. A Subaru legacy is the car to go to if you feel that the Impreza is too small or expensive. It might not be as powerful as an Impreza, but it sure packs a punch. Since production started for the Legacy, there has always been an STI tuned spec and turbo spec Legacy.
The 350Z rivalled cars such as the Porsche Boxster and various rear-wheel-drive muscle cars in the US, such as the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger. Production ended in 2008, and the 350Z was replaced by the 370Z, then replaced by the current Nissan Z (400Z). If you are looking for a project drift car or streetcar on a budget, the 350Z or 370Z is perfect.
The EK9 was one of the best performance hatches to come out of Japan during the 1990s. Good ones are becoming harder and harder to find and the car has become somewhat of a classic.
Honda introduced the EK9 Civic Type R in 1997 and it shared many characteristics with the Integra Type R. The car was put on a serious diet and anything unnecessary, such the sound deadening was removed.
If you are looking for a car that provides luxury motoring without breaking the bank, a Toyota Crown athlete V boasting a 2JZ-GTE could be just what you need. The Crown is Toyota’s longest-running model and is a popular choice with Japanese buyers.
The R35 needs no introduction and is now importable to Canada. The GT-R model featured a completely different design, which separated it from the rest of the Skyline lineup. Under the hood was a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, which delivered 485 HP in early models. The current cars have their engines producing 575 HP, and there is even an insane 720 HP version called GT-R50 (exclusive 50th-anniversary model).
Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars have gained worldwide popularity due to their affordable pricing and high-quality engineering. But why are they often priced lower than their equivalents in other markets? Here are the key reasons:
One of the biggest factors behind JDM cars’ affordability is their fast depreciation rate. Unlike in North America, where cars hold their value longer, vehicles in Japan lose value quickly due to strict vehicle regulations and market preferences.
Japan is home to some of the world’s largest and most efficient car manufacturers, including Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru. High production levels mean there is always a steady supply of vehicles, reducing market prices.
Japan enforces strict emissions and recycling laws, which push older vehicles off the road sooner than in other countries. These regulations make it expensive to own and maintain older cars, encouraging owners to sell them at lower prices rather than keep them.
Japan has a well-established export industry for used vehicles, with thousands of JDM cars being auctioned every week. This large-scale exporting keeps prices low and competitive for international buyers.
