How to import a JDM car from Japan to Ottawa.
Before you decide to bring your dream car into Canada, it’s crucial to think about the rules for importing cars. You should also know about the departments that take care of vehicle imports in Canada. Right now, there are two main departments: CBSA (Canadian Border Service Agency) and TC (Transport Canada). They make sure that import rules and other laws about vehicles are followed. There’s also CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency), which needs your car to be really clean – no soil, sand, dust, bugs, or plant stuff – before it crosses into Canada. This rule counts for all used cars, no matter where they’re coming from.
Rules & Regulations for importing a JDM car to Ottawa:
When it comes to bringing cars into Canada, there are some rules. Canada doesn’t allow cars that don’t meet the rules in the Motor Vehicle Safety Act to be brought in. But, if your car meets specific requirements set by Transport Canada and the Canada Border Service Agency, you can bring in cars easily. Here’s what you need to know:
- The car has to be at least 15 years old based on its manufacturing month and year, and it shouldn’t be classified as a bus. If it’s a bus, it needs to be made before 1971.
- If living in Quebec, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old based on its manufacturing month and year.
- Vehicle must pass radiation and soil exams.
- The vehicle must have air bags.
- The vehicle cannot have an after market steering wheel without airbags or aftermarket seats without airbags.

How to import a JDM car to Ottawa with us.
Our import process is made as simple as possible for our clients, our mission is to make importing a JDM car as simplistic as ordering anything else online.
Step 1:
The process begins with you reaching out to us via one of the ways on our contact page, let us know the details of what you are looking for, we will give you a ballpark of what you can expect to pay and answer any questions.
Step 2:
You will then be asked to sign our import agreement as well as make a fully refundable $1000 deposit.
Step 3:
Once the deposit, and agreement are received the search for your new jdm car can begin. We have three different options, you can search yourself, we can search for you or you can buy from our inventory.
The search can take an unknown amount of time and depends on what you are searching for, however usually this takes one month or less – we will send you translated auction sheets, pictures, videos, and details of many different cars for you to choose from, as well as do pre-purchase inspections, and give our expert advice every step of the way.
Step 4:
Once we have found and decided on a car we will bid on your behalf, if we win you will have to pay in full for the car including all fees within four days of winning bid. we then will transfer the car to our lot in japan to inspect, clean, and get the car ready for shipment to Canada (Shipment takes 5-9 weeks on average).
Update Times
We update our clients whenever a car within the criteria comes up, and if there are none we update you every Monday and Thursday.
The JDM car shipping process.
Once the payments are all settled, we start getting your vehicle ready for shipment. We aim to put your car on the earliest ship available. Usually, the whole process—from start to when it’s delivered—takes about five to nine weeks. A week after your car sets off, we issue the bill of lading. When using us all you have to do is wait patiently! We handle everything
Customs Clearance:
When your vehicle reaches the port as per the scheduled plan we’ve shared with you, we will have a couple documents which will require a signature from you. Having these documents is really important for a smooth and hassle-free clearance from the port.
Shipping explained RO/RO VS Container.
Wondering how you should get your vehicle shipped to your country? Let’s have a look at two of the most common shipping methods used worldwide: Roll-on/Roll-off shipping and Container shipping. In the first section, we’ll discuss how both methods work and then we’ll evaluate the pros and cons of both shipping methods.
RO/RO:
In RORO (Roll-on, Roll-off) shipping, your car literally rolls onto the ship through a big ramp. It’s like parking in a huge space inside the ship called the cargo deck. There are lots of other vehicles there, and workers secure your car with straps to keep it still while the ship moves. Usually, your car keys stay in the ignition during the trip. The cargo deck is usually packed with tons of vehicles like cars, boats, trucks, and more. When the ship reaches your port, workers drive your car off the ship using a ramp and bring it to your destination.
Container:
Container shipping is a different way to ship your car. Unlike RORO, where cars are parked together in a big space, in container shipping, each car gets its own separate container. These containers have specific sizes, like 20 feet or 40 feet long. There’s no need for straps inside these containers because the car stays put. Nobody drives your car and the keys don’t stay in the ignition during container shipping. Instead of driving onto ramps, your car gets packed into a container and then lifted onto the ship by a special crane. When it reaches the port, another crane unloads the container, so there’s no need for workers to drive the cars out on a ramp.

Availability
- RORO shipping is not available in some places, so it’s important to check its availability at your desired port before making any decisions. New vehicle manufacturers have priority with RORO so it’s not uncommon for grey market vehicles to have to wait weeks or months to get a place on the RORO ship.
- Container shipping is available in many countries as it doesn’t require special ports to accommodate loading ramps.
Time
- RORO shipping, when available, usually takes lesser time because the vehicles are simply driven onto the cargo deck and tied down for safety. There should be some gasoline left in your car, and it should be functional so it can be driven in and out of the vessel.
- Container shipping requires more time as it requires the vehicles to be separately packed into the containers and then loaded onto the vessel. There’s no need for any gasoline as container shipping doesn’t require any driving during the process.
Cost
- Roll-on Roll-off shipping is often considered as the most cost-effective solution for vehicle transportation across different countries.
- Container shipping is generally more costly as it requires a separate, dedicated container for your vehicle.
Extra Parts
- In RORO shipping, you can not leave any personal belongings and other material in the car, because the cars are open and there’s no safety of the material.
- Container shipping is slightly better in this regard because the cars are not left open in container shipping.
Ease vs Risk
- Due to the ease in loading and unloading, RORO shipping is considered as more convenient as it allows you to be able to immediately drive your car, right after the long overseas journey. However, if the vehicle has been lowered via aftermarket lowering springs or has low ground effects / body kits then you’re at the mercy of multiple drivers who will be responsible for loading/unloading your vehicle off ramps as quickly (not as carefully) as possible.
- The loading and unloading process is in Container shipping is not easy. It may require special tools and takes more time. However, if the vehicle you’re importing is highly modified or not running at all then you can take your time to carefully evaluate it’s condition prior to attempting to start the vehicle.
Car Height and Size
- Ro/Ro shipping is not available for vehicles which are too low and can’t safely make it up ramps, or vehicles which are too large and won’t fit on the ship.

The seller writes half of the sheet and the auction inspector writes the other half. The seller writes the car info, sales points, and notes. The inspector writes the condition report and diagram notes. The inspector also checks the info written by the seller to make sure it’s correct.
yes you can, The auction is a third party. That means they are not affiliated with the seller. In fact, the auction gets paid whether the car sells or not. There are over 100 auctions across Japan. They are in competition with one another. If the inspections were not trust worthy at that auction, buyers would stop buying from them.

It happens from time to time when the inspector misses something on the auction report. If this happens, we can claim to the auction. Providing the auction allows for the claim, we can either be awarded a monetary refund, or the option to return the vehicle. We will translate the sheets for you. This includes the sales points, notes, report, and the Japanese on the diagram notes. Note that Jurojin imports does full translations of the auction sheets. Most exporters only partially translate the sheets and some don’t at all.
Different auctions have slight differences in there sheets, but for the most part, this is not necessary to pay attention to in order to buy a car. The same basic formula is shared between all the major auctions.
You can buy any grade car that you like. Some people want pristine cars, some want project cars, and there are customers everywhere in between. What I have seen however is that most people buying lower grade cars end up not being completely satisfied. Unless you are an expert in building cars, it’s easy to fall into the trap of not realizing how much is involved in bringing life back into a car.
Be careful looking at the pictures of the car. The true vehicle condition is not accurately shown in the pictures. Get in the habit of reviewing the auction sheet body diagram in detail instead of looking at the pictures to gauge the quality of the vehicle. Auction sheets always describe even the smallest flaws and issues in detail, so its best to cross examine using both.
